Is it serious if a pomegranate seed is inhaled into the trachea?
Choking on a pomegranate seed is usually quite serious, as it can not only cause noticeable symptoms such as coughing and difficulty breathing, but severe cases may lead to suffocation and even death. It is recommended to seek medical attention promptly for proper treatment.
The seed can significantly irritate the trachea and potentially block it, reducing the airway's ventilation function and causing distinct paroxysmal coughing, shortness of breath, and other discomforts. If the pomegranate seed is small, although symptoms may be obvious, suffocation is unlikely to occur within a short time. However, if the seed is large enough to exceed the trachea's diameter, symptoms such as cyanosis (bluish discoloration) of the lips, severe breathing difficulties, and even death may develop rapidly.
It is advisable to seek immediate medical care. A tracheal endoscopy performed by a physician should be used to remove the seed. If removal via endoscopy fails, surgical intervention may be required.
