Is a lower erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) always better?
The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is generally lower is better.
ESR is a blood test parameter that reflects the rate at which red blood cells settle in plasma. Normally, ESR values vary slightly between men and women but typically range from 0 to 15 mm/h. A higher ESR value indicates the presence of inflammation or infection in the body. Therefore, a lower ESR is preferable, although specific interpretations should be based on individual health conditions and medical advice.
There are many possible causes of elevated ESR, including infectious diseases, rheumatic disorders, severe anemia, other blood disorders, and malignant tumors. The main reason for a high ESR is inflammation in the body, such as bacterial or viral infections. If the elevated ESR is due to a bacterial infection, symptoms like fever may occur, and treatment under a doctor's guidance may include medications such as cefradine tablets or cefuroxime axetil tablets. If the elevation is caused by a viral infection, antiviral drugs such as ribavirin capsules or oseltamivir capsules may be prescribed under medical supervision.
Patients are advised not to eat excessively, to maintain a healthy weight, and to ensure a balanced intake of meat and vegetables.
