Introduction
In general, the procedure of thoracentesis and drainage includes positioning the patient, localizing and anesthetizing the site, performing the puncture and drainage, and securing the drainage tube. After completion of drainage, the catheter is removed, a sterile gauze is placed over the site, gentle pressure is applied for a short period, and then it is fixed with adhesive tape. Thoracentesis and drainage should be performed under the guidance of a qualified physician. If any discomfort occurs, prompt medical attention is recommended to avoid potential harm to the body.

Generally, the procedure of thoracentesis and drainage includes the following steps: positioning, localization and anesthesia, puncture and drainage, and fixation. The specific steps are as follows:

1. The patient sits facing the back of a chair, with both forearms resting on the chair and the forehead lying on the forearms.

2. Locate the puncture site using ultrasound and percussion, then perform local anesthesia with lidocaine.

3. Disinfect the skin at the puncture site and drape with sterile towels.

4. Make a small incision (about 2 mm) at the puncture site, and slowly insert the needle into the pleural cavity until pleural fluid can be aspirated.

5. Insert a guidewire through the central lumen of the needle into the pleural cavity, then remove the needle while leaving the guidewire in place.

6. Advance the drainage catheter over the guidewire into the pleural cavity, then remove the guidewire. Connect the drainage tube to a drainage bottle or bag, and secure the tube to the chest wall either by suturing or using a transparent adhesive dressing.

7. After completion of drainage, remove the catheter, cover the site with sterile gauze, apply gentle pressure for a short time, and secure the gauze with adhesive tape.

Thoracentesis and drainage should be performed under the guidance of a qualified physician. If any discomfort occurs, prompt medical attention is recommended to avoid harm to the body.
