Why is it not recommended to take lactulose in the evening?
Lactulose usually refers to lactulose oral solution, a laxative commonly not recommended for evening use, as it may cause frequent bowel movements, bloating, diarrhea, reduced appetite, and insomnia.
1. Frequent Bowel Movements
Lactulose oral solution is a gradually acting, mild stimulant laxative. Its bowel-regulating effect usually takes a relatively long time, with noticeable results appearing 12 to 48 hours after administration. Therefore, taking lactulose in the evening may not produce an immediate laxative effect that night, but could instead lead to frequent bowel movements during the night, disrupting sleep quality.
2. Bloating
After administration, lactulose may undergo fermentation in the intestines, producing gas that causes bloating and audible intestinal sounds (borborygmi). These uncomfortable symptoms may disturb sleep and rest when they occur at night.
3. Diarrhea
In some cases, the medication may cause diarrhea, particularly at high doses or in sensitive individuals. Diarrhea can lead to frequent nighttime bowel movements, reducing total sleep duration.
4. Reduced Appetite
Taking this medication in the evening may easily cause gastrointestinal discomfort and bloating, decreasing food intake at dinner and impairing the body's absorption of nutrients.
5. Insomnia
After taking the medication at night, frequent bowel movements and abdominal discomfort may interfere with falling asleep and achieving deep sleep, potentially leading to insomnia.
It is recommended to use this medication according to the instructions of a physician or pharmacist, ensuring appropriate timing and dosage for safe and effective treatment.
