Introduction
Excessive flatulence in pregnant women may be caused by physiological or pathological factors, such as hormonal imbalances and uterine enlargement. As the fetus grows and develops during pregnancy, the physical burden on the pregnant woman increases, often leading to reduced physical activity. This can slow down gastrointestinal motility, impair normal digestion of food, cause bloating, and result in increased flatulence.

In general, increased flatulence in pregnant women may be caused by physiological factors or pathological factors, such as hormonal imbalances and uterine enlargement. The details are as follows:

1. Physiological Factors

As the fetus grows and develops during pregnancy, the physical burden on the pregnant woman increases, often leading to reduced physical activity. This may slow down gastrointestinal motility, impair normal digestion of food, and result in gas accumulation, thereby causing increased flatulence. This condition typically does not require special treatment and can be relieved through appropriate exercise.

2. Pathological Factors

1) Hormonal Imbalance

To maintain a suitable environment for fetal development, pregnant women experience continuously elevated hormone levels, which may stimulate the gastrointestinal tract and lead to the aforementioned symptoms. Symptoms can be alleviated by reducing intake of high-fat and high-cholesterol foods, thereby lowering hormone levels triggered by excessive nutritional intake.

2) Uterine Enlargement

As the fetus gradually increases in size, the uterus expands as well, compressing the digestive system. This compression prevents normal release of gas from the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in increased flatulence. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid foods that easily cause bloating. Symptoms usually resolve after delivery.

Besides the above, increased flatulence in pregnant women may also result from excessive strain on the spleen and stomach. It is recommended that pregnant women maintain a positive mood throughout pregnancy.
