What should I do if a ligament is torn?
When a ligament is torn, it is important to seek medical attention promptly for proper evaluation and treatment. Different treatment methods may be adopted depending on the patient's specific condition, such as emergency management, conservative therapy, or possibly surgical repair. Details are as follows:
1. Emergency Management
If a ligament tear occurs during exercise or physical activity, stop the activity immediately and sit or lie down to reduce stress on the injured ligament. Apply ice to the affected area within the first 24 hours after injury to minimize local bleeding and fluid leakage. After 24 hours, apply heat locally to help absorb accumulated fluids.
2. Conservative Treatment
In most cases, collateral ligament injuries of the joint can be treated with immobilization using a cast, along with medications such as Huoxue Zhitong Capsules, Diclofenac Diethylamine, and Celecoxib Capsules.
3. Surgical Treatment
If the ligament tear is severe and cannot be effectively managed conservatively, surgery may be required to restore ligament function.
After active treatment, patients should also perform functional exercises and engage in appropriate physical activity. However, care should be taken not to overexert, to avoid secondary injury.
