Introduction
Pregnant women can generally identify contractions by monitoring the duration of uterine tightening, fetal movement, and contraction patterns. Typically in late pregnancy, especially between 36 to 38 weeks of gestation, false contractions (Braxton Hicks contractions) are common due to hormonal changes during pregnancy. These contractions are short in duration—less than 30 seconds each—and occur at irregular intervals. During such contractions, the stomach feels tight, but pain is usually mild or not noticeable.

Pregnant women can generally identify contractions by observing contraction duration, fetal movement, and contraction rhythm. The details are as follows:

1. Contraction Duration

Typically in the late stages of pregnancy, especially between weeks 36 and 38, false contractions (Braxton Hicks contractions) may occur due to hormonal changes during pregnancy. These contractions are short in duration—less than 30 seconds each—and occur at irregular intervals. During such contractions, the stomach may feel tight, but pain is usually mild or not obvious.

2. Fetal Movement

Uterine contractions may also be triggered by various factors such as frequent fetal movements, sexual stimulation during pregnancy, medication, or physical touch and stimulation. These contractions lack regularity and do not cause abdominal pain or vaginal bleeding; they may occur at any time during pregnancy. For physiological contractions, it is important to promptly assess fetal well-being, screen for underlying medical conditions, and minimize external stimuli.

3. Contraction Rhythm

If rhythmic contractions gradually increase in frequency during late pregnancy, last 30 seconds or longer, and repeat every 5–10 minutes, accompanied by cervical dilation, light vaginal bleeding, and progressively intensifying abdominal pain, these are signs of impending labor, and immediate medical attention at a hospital is required.

In addition to the above, contractions can also be identified by the sensation of pain. It is recommended that during contractions, deep breathing exercises may help, and gently massaging the lower abdomen with both hands can provide relief. If there is aching or pressure in the lower back or sacral area, applying pressure with a fist to the affected region may help alleviate discomfort.
