Can gout patients drink soda water?
Generally, patients with gout should not drink soda water containing salt. The specific reasons are as follows:
Gout patients are advised against drinking salted soda water, as it is not conducive to controlling the condition and may easily lead to elevated blood pressure. Instead, gout patients should drink plenty of plain water—about 2,000–3,000 ml per day—to increase urine output and promote uric acid excretion. They may also moderately consume sparkling water or drink corn silk tea. Patients should avoid foods high in purines, abstain from alcohol, and eat more vegetables and fruits. During remission, they should actively take uric acid-lowering medications such as colchicine tablets or allopurinol tablets as prescribed by a doctor to bring serum uric acid levels back to normal. Gout is a metabolic disorder characterized primarily by joint damage, commonly associated with high uric acid levels, excessive purine intake, intense physical activity, cold exposure, and other factors. Patients with gout typically need to avoid high-purine foods to prevent worsening of the condition. Although salted soda water contains relatively low levels of purines, its consumption may interfere with uric acid excretion in gout patients, leading to uric acid accumulation and increased uric acid levels in the body. Therefore, gout patients are not advised to drink salted soda water or other soft drinks.
It is recommended that gout patients seek timely medical treatment to prevent disease progression. In daily life, they should strictly control their diet, avoid high-purine foods, and refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages, strong tea, and other stimulant drinks.
