Can silver ear fungus (tremella) be eaten if soaked for more than 24 hours?
In general, tremella (white fungus) that has been soaked for more than 24 hours is still edible.
Tremella contains various nutrients such as proteins, amino acids, and vitamins, and has effects including clearing heat, improving stomach function, beautifying the skin, removing spots, and aiding weight loss. It is recommended to soak tremella for 3–4 hours. If tremella has been soaked for more than 24 hours but shows no signs of spoilage—such as rotting, unpleasant odor, or abnormal color—it is usually still safe to eat, provided it is thoroughly cooked at high temperature before consumption. However, soaking tremella for over 24 hours increases the risk of bacterial growth, so prolonged soaking should be avoided. If symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain occur after consumption, medications such as amoxicillin capsules, levofloxacin tablets, or cefixime granules may be used under a doctor's guidance to relieve symptoms.
In daily life, it is recommended to use cold or lukewarm water to soak tremella. Hot water is not recommended, as high temperatures may destroy its nutritional components and negatively affect the texture and nutritional value of the tremella.
