Can you take a bath when you have chickenpox?
Generally, it is acceptable to take a bath when having chickenpox, but temperature control is important. The details are as follows:
Bathing during chickenpox can help maintain skin cleanliness and reduce the risk of infection. When bathing, ensure the water temperature is comfortable—neither too hot nor too cold—with a recommended range of 37–38°C. It is advisable to use a shower rather than a bathtub to minimize soaking and friction on the blistered areas. Additionally, avoid scrubbing the affected areas vigorously, as this may rupture the blisters and increase the risk of infection.
However, if the chickenpox is severe or if blisters have already ruptured with exudate present, bathing is not recommended. In such cases, bathing may increase the risk of infection and hinder recovery. Patients should follow their doctor's advice and use medications such as acyclovir tablets, valacyclovir hydrochloride dispersible tablets, or famciclovir capsules to aid recovery.
During treatment, patients should maintain good personal hygiene, follow a light diet, and avoid spicy or irritating foods.
