Is wearing a prism for strabismus lifelong?
In general, patients with strabismus may need to wear prismatic lenses for life. The detailed analysis is as follows:
For patients with structural strabismus, severe strabismus, or strabismus caused by neuromuscular diseases, the condition may not be completely corrected through surgery or other treatments. These patients may need to wear prismatic glasses long-term or even permanently to help align their vision, reduce diplopia (double vision), and improve quality of life. Such patients should continuously monitor changes in their vision and follow medical advice for regular eye examinations to ensure that the prism power and positioning remain appropriate for their current ocular condition.
However, if after a period of corrective treatment the strabismus shows significant and stable improvement, and symptoms such as diplopia or misaligned eyes no longer occur, then lifelong use of prismatic lenses may not be necessary.
It is important to maintain good eye-use habits, avoid prolonged near-work and overuse of the eyes, to reduce ocular strain.
