Can salicylic acid fade acne marks?
Salicylic acid is commonly available in the form of salicylic acid ointment. It is generally believed that if acne marks are caused by factors such as hyperpigmentation, using salicylic acid products at appropriate concentrations may help fade the marks. However, if the marks result from skin trauma or similar causes, salicylic acid may not be effective in lightening them.
Due to its lipid-soluble nature, salicylic acid can penetrate deep into skin tissues, dissolve dead skin cells, and inhibit melanin production, thereby helping to reduce the appearance of acne marks. If acne marks are due to pigmentation, thickened stratum corneum, or post-inflammatory changes, and the patient's skin does not exhibit sensitivity to salicylic acid, using properly formulated salicylic acid products at suitable concentrations may aid in fading these marks.
However, if the patient has broken skin, worsening inflammation, or allergic reactions, or if the acne marks stem from non-pigmentary causes such as skin injury, applying salicylic acid may not improve the marks and could potentially exacerbate skin problems.
Prior to using any salicylic acid product, it is important to consult a qualified dermatologist for a skin assessment and to follow medical advice regarding the appropriate concentration and dosage.
