Introduction
1. Damage to taste buds, often associated with a preference for excessively hot foods; 2. Zinc deficiency—food additives may contribute to zinc loss, while picky eating habits and prolonged consumption of fast food can also lead to inadequate zinc intake; 3. Nasal disorders, such as obstructive lesions within the nasal cavity; 4. Excessive psychological stress—prolonged or chronic stress or depression may result in impaired taste perception.

The inability to distinguish tastes such as sour, sweet, bitter, and spicy—or reduced sensitivity to these flavors—is commonly referred to as taste disorder, or ageusia (loss of taste). So, what are the causes of ageusia? Below, we provide an explanation.

Causes of Ageusia

1. Damage to Taste Buds

Impaired taste bud function is one cause of ageusia. Consuming excessively hot foods—or other factors causing injury to the taste buds—may sever taste nerves, thereby disrupting taste perception and leading to ageusia.

2. Zinc Deficiency

Zinc deficiency in the body may contribute to ageusia. Reduced blood zinc levels can impair taste sensation. Food additives may promote zinc loss, while picky eating habits and frequent consumption of fast food can lead to inadequate zinc intake. Moreover, zinc-dependent enzymes are essential for alcohol metabolism; excessive alcohol consumption not only depletes zinc but also directly damages taste buds, potentially resulting in ageusia.

3. Nasal Disorders

Nasal pathology inevitably affects taste perception. Conditions such as nasal obstruction, severe damage to olfactory receptor mucosa, or advanced nasal malignancies can all lead to ageusia and require prompt medical attention.

4. Excessive Psychological Stress

Poor mental health—such as chronic stress or prolonged depression—can also result in ageusia. However, this type of ageusia is typically transient taste numbness, a temporary symptom that usually resolves spontaneously. There is no need for excessive concern; instead, managing emotional well-being, maintaining a positive mood, reducing life stressors, and minimizing negative influences can help restore normal taste function.
