Introduction
Under normal circumstances, Astragalus (Huangqi) is incompatible with ingredients such as mung beans (Lüdou), Chinese honeylocust (Zaojia), Szechwan lovage rhizome (Wulingzhi), radish (Luobo), and Veratrum root (Lilu). If combined use is necessary, it is recommended to do so under the guidance of a physician. The heat-clearing and detoxifying effect of mung beans may weaken the qi-tonifying effect of Astragalus. According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, the heat-clearing property of mung beans may counteract the qi-enhancing effect of Astragalus, thereby reducing its therapeutic efficacy.

Generally, astragalus (Huangqi) is contraindicated with mung beans, Chinese honeylocust (Zao Jia), galls (Wulingzhi), radish, and Veratrum (Lilu). If necessary for use, it is recommended to do so under the guidance of a physician. Detailed explanations are as follows:

1. Mung Beans

The heat-clearing and detoxifying effects of mung beans may weaken the Qi-tonifying effects of astragalus. In traditional Chinese medicine, the heat-clearing properties of mung beans may conflict with the Qi-tonifying effects of astragalus, thereby reducing its therapeutic effectiveness.

2. Chinese Honeylocust (Zao Jia)

Chinese honeylocust may reduce the efficacy of astragalus. Zao Jia has a strong Qi-breaking effect, while astragalus primarily functions to tonify Qi. Combining the two may lead to deficiency of both Qi and blood, which is detrimental to disease treatment.

3. Galls (Wulingzhi)

Wulingzhi has blood-activating and stasis-resolving properties, whereas astragalus is mainly used for Qi tonification. According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, the blood-activating effect of Wulingzhi may weaken the Qi-tonifying effect of astragalus, thus reducing its therapeutic potency.

4. Radish

Astragalus tends to be warm in nature and functions to tonify Qi, while radish has a Qi-descending effect. When used together with astragalus, radish may reduce its Qi-tonifying function and may potentially exacerbate symptoms such as abdominal distension and fullness.

5. Veratrum (Lilu)

Lilu can reduce the efficacy of astragalus. According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, Lilu has a strong effect of breaking up blood and eliminating stasis, whereas astragalus primarily functions to tonify Qi. Combining these two may result in deficiency of both Qi and blood, which is unfavorable for the treatment of diseases.

Although the above-mentioned foods or herbs are considered incompatible with astragalus, this does not absolutely mean they cannot be used together. In daily dietary practices or medication, they may be appropriately combined according to individual constitution and health condition.
