Introduction
The most common adverse effect of metronidazole is gastrointestinal irritation, manifesting as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and abdominal distension. Additionally, neurological side effects may occur, such as dizziness and vertigo following oral administration; patients may also experience abnormal head sensations, ataxia, polyneuritis, and limb paresthesia.

Metronidazole is a commonly used medication with notable anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. However, overdose or improper use may lead to adverse reactions. So, what are the potential side effects of metronidazole? Below is a detailed explanation.

What Are the Side Effects of Metronidazole?

The most common side effect of metronidazole is gastrointestinal irritation. After taking the drug, patients may experience gastrointestinal discomfort—including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and bloating. To minimize these adverse effects, metronidazole should be taken after meals—ideally within 15 to 30 minutes following food intake. Additionally, neurological side effects may occur, such as dizziness, vertigo, abnormal head sensations, ataxia, polyneuritis, and limb numbness. Generally, symptoms resolve within 3–5 days after discontinuation of the drug. However, if adverse reactions are severe or persistent, medical evaluation is strongly recommended. Importantly, alcohol consumption must be strictly avoided both during metronidazole treatment and for at least two weeks after discontinuation. Metronidazole can trigger a disulfiram-like reaction when combined with alcohol, potentially causing systemic symptoms and even life-threatening complications; therefore, metronidazole must be used with caution.

Knowledge Extension: Therapeutic Uses of Metronidazole

1. Gingival Bleeding

Metronidazole is effective in treating gingival bleeding because it shortens coagulation time and promotes the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin—key processes in hemostasis. In most cases, gingival bleeding resolves within one week of consistent metronidazole therapy.

2. Oral Infections

Metronidazole is highly effective against oral infections, particularly those caused by anaerobic bacteria—the primary pathogens responsible for many oral infections. As such, metronidazole is considered a first-line, targeted antimicrobial agent widely used in the clinical management of anaerobic oral infections.
