Introduction
MCV, or Mean Corpuscular Volume, is an important parameter in routine blood tests that reflects the average size of red blood cells. The normal reference range for MCV may vary slightly depending on the testing method and population. Generally, the normal MCV range for adults is 80–100 fL. For children, the normal MCV values gradually approach those of adults as they grow older.

Under normal circumstances, MCV (Mean Corpuscular Volume) is an important indicator in routine blood tests used to reflect the average size of red blood cells. The normal range for MCV may vary slightly depending on the testing method and population, but generally, the normal range for adults is 80–100 fL. Detailed analysis is as follows:

For children, the normal MCV value gradually approaches that of adults as they grow older. Newborns have higher MCV values, typically ranging from 95–103 fL, because their red blood cells are relatively larger. As the child grows and develops, the MCV gradually decreases and approaches adult levels around one year of age.

Changes in MCV values have significant clinical implications. If MCV is below the normal range, it is commonly seen in microcytic hypochromic anemias such as iron deficiency anemia and thalassemia, where the red blood cells become smaller. Conversely, an elevated MCV may indicate conditions such as megaloblastic anemia, alcoholic liver disease, or hypothyroidism, in which the red blood cells are enlarged.

MCV is an important reference index for evaluating types of anemia and diagnosing certain diseases. However, in clinical diagnosis, MCV alone should not be used as the sole basis for disease assessment. It is necessary to integrate other routine blood parameters—such as red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration, and red cell distribution width—as well as the patient's clinical symptoms and medical history for comprehensive analysis, in order to determine the underlying cause and formulate an appropriate treatment plan.
