Introduction
1. Replenish fluids—preferably with warm water; adding a small amount of honey may enhance its moisturizing and soothing effects. 2. Gargle with warm saline solution: Salt has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-infective properties, helping maintain oral hygiene and alleviate dryness and soreness in the throat. 3. Maintain a light diet—consume more vegetables and fruits. 4. Increase ambient humidity—regularly open windows for ventilation or use a humidifier.

Dryness and scratchiness in the throat are commonly associated with chronic pharyngitis in clinical practice. This condition may be linked to poor lifestyle habits, such as frequent consumption of spicy or irritating foods, regular smoking and alcohol intake, and insufficient intake of vegetables and fruits—factors that can contribute to throat dryness. So, what should one do when experiencing throat dryness? The following addresses this question.

What to Do for Throat Dryness

1. Increase Fluid Intake

During dry seasons—such as autumn—it is essential to drink plenty of water, preferably warm water. Avoid gulping large amounts at once; instead, sip water slowly and steadily for optimal hydration and relief from dryness. If throat dryness is particularly severe, adding honey to your water can enhance its soothing and moisturizing effects.

2. Gargle with Saline Solution

Salt possesses antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and infection-fighting properties. If you experience throat dryness during autumn, gargling with a saline solution can help. It is recommended to rinse your mouth with salt water in the morning, after meals, and before bedtime—not only to maintain oral hygiene but also to alleviate throat dryness and soreness.

3. Adopt a Light Diet

Consume more vegetables and fruits known for their heat-clearing, detoxifying, fluid-generating, and throat-soothing properties—such as water chestnuts, cucumbers, loofah, bitter melon, and pears—without impairing yang qi. Additionally, moderately increase intake of dual-purpose food-medicinals like lily bulbs, rock sugar, Chinese yam, coix seed, and glutinous rice, which also support throat health and comfort.

4. Increase Indoor Humidity

Individuals who spend prolonged periods working or studying in dry environments are more prone to throat dryness. Raising indoor relative humidity can effectively relieve this symptom. Therefore, it is advisable to ventilate regularly by opening windows, or use a humidifier to moisten indoor air.
