Is cumin the same as fennel?
In general, fennel is not cumin, and a detailed analysis is as follows:

Fennel and cumin are not the same; they are fruits from different plants. Botanically speaking, fennel belongs to the Foeniculum genus in the Apiaceae (umbelliferous) family, while cumin comes from the Cuminum genus of the same family. In terms of appearance, fennel seeds are relatively larger, usually light green or yellowish green in color, and slightly curved in shape. Cumin seeds are smaller, more yellowish brown in color, and more straight in shape. Regarding aroma, fennel emits a mild, fragrant, and sweet scent, whereas cumin has a stronger, more pungent odor with a distinct spicy fragrance.
Although both fennel and cumin are commonly used spices and traditional Chinese medicinal materials, they differ significantly in their sources, appearance, functions and uses, as well as contraindications. Therefore, when using them, choices should be made according to specific needs and physical conditions.
