Introduction
The surgical timing for arteriovenous fistula (AVF) allows for assessment of both arterial and venous conditions. However, the optimal timing for surgery depends primarily on the quality of the patient’s arteries and veins. Additional factors include whether the patient has undergone prior surgeries, requires dialysis, or has uremia. In cases of trauma-induced arteriovenous fistula, this etiology must also be taken into account.

The timing of arteriovenous (AV) fistula surgery depends on the assessment of both arterial and venous conditions. Preoperative evaluation of arterial and venous quality is essential. For instance, in AV fistula creation for hemodialysis, surgical anastomosis between an artery and a vein is typically required.

However, the optimal timing of surgery is determined primarily by the quality of the patient’s arteries and veins, as well as by prior surgical history, the need for dialysis, or the presence of uremia. In cases of traumatic AV fistula, surgical timing further depends on the extent of trauma, whether the artery and vein are transected, and whether the distal and proximal arterial segments can be clearly identified—all critical factors influencing the timing and approach of AV fistula surgery.
