Introduction
If breast pain occurs outside the lactation period: 1. It is most commonly caused by mammary gland hyperplasia. In such cases, traditional Chinese patent medicines that promote blood circulation, remove blood stasis, soothe the liver, and relieve depression may be used. 2. Non-lactational mastitis. This type of mastitis is not bacterial in origin; therefore, anti-inflammatory drugs—specifically antibiotics—are generally not recommended. Indiscriminate use of antibiotics may lead to adverse effects such as dysbiosis.

Breast pain has many possible causes and requires differentiated management. If the pain occurs outside the lactation period:

1. In most cases, it is caused by mammary gland hyperplasia. In such instances, traditional Chinese patent medicines that promote blood circulation, resolve stasis, soothe the liver, and relieve depression may be used.

2. Non-lactational mastitis. This type of mastitis is typically non-bacterial in origin; therefore, antibiotics are generally not recommended. Indiscriminate use of antibiotics may lead to adverse effects such as dysbiosis.

However, for lactational mastitis—characterized by breast pain accompanied by fever and elevated white blood cell count—it is advisable to use second-generation cephalosporin antibiotics (e.g., Cefuroxime Axetil). These medications are considered compatible with breastfeeding and may be safely used under a physician’s guidance.
