Introduction
1. Dry air: Maintain adequate humidity in the room, for example, by using a humidifier at home. 2. Allergic reaction: Exposure to allergens such as pollen, willow catkins, dust mites, or animal dander—particularly in the morning. 3. Chronic inflammation: Conditions such as tonsillitis, bronchitis, or pneumonia. 4. Pulmonary detoxification: Coughing is a reflexive response of the body and serves a protective function.

Coughing serves a protective function by clearing foreign substances and secretions from the respiratory tract. However, persistent coughing—especially when it transitions from acute to chronic—can cause significant discomfort, including chest tightness, throat itchiness, and shortness of breath. So, what causes morning cough? Below, we address this question.

Causes of Morning Cough

1. Dry Air

During cold, dry autumn and winter months, low humidity can lead to throat dryness, triggering coughing upon waking. To alleviate this, maintain adequate indoor humidity—for example, by using a humidifier. If a humidifier is unavailable, alternative methods such as mopping floors with water can also help increase ambient moisture.

2. Allergic Reactions

Individuals with allergic constitutions may develop coughing, runny nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes upon exposure to common allergens in the morning—such as pollen, willow catkins, dust mites, or animal dander. Under a physician’s guidance, antihistamines or other anti-allergy medications may be prescribed. Additionally, patients should avoid known allergens and maintain a clean, hygienic home environment.

3. Chronic Inflammation

Respiratory tract infections resulting from systemic inflammation—such as tonsillitis, bronchitis, or pneumonia—may manifest as morning cough. Treatment should be guided by a physician and may include appropriate medications. Patients should also follow dietary recommendations, avoiding raw, cold, spicy, irritating, or overly sweet foods.

4. Pulmonary Detoxification

Coughing is a reflexive physiological response that plays a protective role—helping clear foreign particles and secretions from the pharynx and bronchi—and serves as one mechanism for bodily detoxification. According to traditional Chinese medicine, the optimal time for lung detoxification occurs between 3:00 and 5:00 a.m.; thus, many patients experience their most severe coughing episodes during this period.
