Introduction
Tonsillitis: Tonsillitis in infants typically occurs due to relatively low immune resistance, making them susceptible to infection by staphylococci or streptococci. Common symptoms include high fever, vomiting, loss of appetite, and generalized body aches. Additional symptoms may include rapid breathing, difficulty swallowing, and slurred speech.

A baby’s fever accompanied by rapid breathing may be caused by tonsillitis or pneumonia, both of which can be treated with oral medications and intravenous (IV) therapy.

Why does a baby develop fever and rapid breathing—and what should be done?

Tonsillitis: Tonsillitis in infants commonly occurs when their immune defenses are weakened, allowing infection by Staphylococcus or Streptococcus bacteria. Typical symptoms include high fever, vomiting, loss of appetite, generalized body aches and fatigue, as well as rapid breathing, difficulty swallowing, and slurred speech. Antibiotics prescribed by a physician—such as roxithromycin granules or phenoxymethylpenicillin potassium granules—may be used for treatment.

Pneumonia: Pneumonia in infants typically arises when their immunity is compromised and bacterial pathogens invade the respiratory tract. Common manifestations include fever, cough, and sputum production, often accompanied by tachypnea (rapid breathing), blood-tinged or purulent sputum, and—in severe cases—nausea, vomiting, or even altered consciousness or coma. Under medical supervision, antibacterial agents such as amoxicillin granules or cefaclor granules may be administered. Adjunctive symptomatic treatment may include expectorant and antitussive agents—for example, ambroxol hydrochloride oral solution or pediatric Kechuanling oral liquid.

If symptoms do not improve with oral medication, hospital-based intravenous therapy may be required—for instance, cefuroxime sodium for injection or cefradine for injection.

During treatment, avoid feeding the baby spicy or irritating foods, as these may exacerbate the condition.
