Why Does a 4-Year-Old Child Snore While Sleeping, and What Can Be Done?
Some mothers notice that their babies begin snoring as soon as they fall asleep—a relatively uncommon occurrence, since most infants sleep quietly. Is this a sign of abnormality? Let’s explore the possible causes and solutions.

Why does a 4-year-old child snore during sleep—and what can be done?
Snoring in a 4-year-old may result from upper airway obstruction; however, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) should also be considered. Both conditions may be managed with appropriate medical treatment.
Airway Obstruction: Airway obstruction may be caused by foreign bodies lodged in the trachea or bronchi. Affected children may experience dyspnea, a sensation of suffocation, snoring during sleep, tachycardia, hoarseness, and, in some cases, paroxysmal coughing. Under a physician’s guidance, antibiotics such as cefaclor granules or amoxicillin capsules may be prescribed.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS): OSAS is often associated with narrowing of the upper airway or diminished neuromuscular function required to maintain airway patency during sleep. Clinical manifestations include snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, dry mouth upon waking, headache, impaired concentration, and memory deficits. Under medical supervision, medications such as Tongqiao Biyan Granules (a traditional Chinese medicine for nasal congestion and rhinitis) or amoxicillin granules may be used to alleviate symptoms.
In daily life, encourage your child to drink plenty of warm water, which supports healthy metabolism. Also include vitamin-rich fruits—such as apples, bananas, and oranges—in their diet.
If snoring persists beyond the resolution of a common cold or nasal congestion—and especially if the snoring is loud—parents should promptly take their child to a hospital for evaluation. Enlarged adenoids or tonsils are common underlying causes. Since quality sleep is vital for a child’s growth and development, parents should strive to accompany their child at bedtime and create a safe, comfortable sleeping environment.
We hope the above information is helpful. Wishing you a happy and healthy life!
