Tachycardia is not synonymous with atrial fibrillation. A heart rate exceeding 100 beats per minute is defined as tachycardia. Numerous conditions can cause tachycardia, including hyperthyroidism, hypokalemia, and fever; as well as various types of supraventricular and ventricular tachyarrhythmias—such as atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, and supraventricular tachycardia.

No, tachycardia is not synonymous with atrial fibrillation. Tachycardia is defined as a heart rate greater than 100 bpm. Numerous conditions can cause tachycardia, including hyperthyroidism, hypokalemia, and fever; as well as various types of supraventricular and ventricular tachyarrhythmias—such as atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, and supraventricular tachycardia (SVT).
Physiological factors may also induce tachycardia—for example, intense physical exercise, consuming strong tea or coffee, or alcohol intake. In such cases, tachycardia typically resolves spontaneously with rest.
It is essential to identify the underlying cause of tachycardia. If it results from physiological factors, no specific treatment is required.
For tachycardia caused by hypokalemia or fever, potassium supplementation (e.g., oral potassium chloride) may be necessary. In cases of hyperthyroidism-induced tachycardia, antithyroid medications—such as methimazole or propylthiouracil—are indicated. Fever-related tachycardia requires identification of its etiology; if infection is present, appropriate antimicrobial therapy should be initiated.
When tachycardia arises from arrhythmias, antiarrhythmic drugs—such as amiodarone or propafenone—may be used. If sinus rhythm cannot be restored, rate-controlling agents—including sustained-release metoprolol succinate or bisoprolol—may be prescribed to slow the ventricular response.
Patients with tachycardia should avoid certain foods and beverages that may exacerbate symptoms—such as strong tea, coffee, and alcoholic drinks.
A light, low-fat diet is recommended. Patients should avoid fried or greasy foods and organ meats, and instead consume ample fresh fruits and vegetables to promote overall health.
