Introduction
First, it helps prevent anemia in pregnant women. The body requires folate to produce normal red blood cells. In China, the prevalence of anemia among women of childbearing age is 20.6%, and insufficient folate intake can lead to anemia during pregnancy. Second, it helps prevent congenital abnormalities in the baby and reduces the risk of birth defects. Taking folic acid supplements can help prevent fetal congenital heart disease and other birth defects.

Folic acid, also known as vitamin B9, is a water-soluble vitamin. It was originally isolated from spinach leaves, hence its name “folic acid.” Folic acid plays a critical role in placental formation, normal fetal development, and healthy cognitive development. Deficiency in folic acid can lead to megaloblastic anemia and leukopenia, making it especially vital for women planning pregnancy.

Functions of Folic Acid Supplements

First, folic acid helps prevent anemia during pregnancy. The maternal body requires folic acid to produce normal red blood cells. In China, the prevalence of anemia among women of childbearing age is 20.6%; insufficient folic acid intake increases the risk of anemia in pregnant women.

Second, folic acid supplementation helps prevent congenital malformations in the baby and reduces the risk of birth defects—including congenital heart disease.

Third, folic acid helps prevent neural tube defects (NTDs), one of the most common congenital anomalies among newborns in China. If women begin taking the recommended daily dose of folic acid at least one month before conception and continue through the first trimester (first three months) of pregnancy, the risk of NTDs in their babies decreases by 50–70%.

Fourth, folic acid promotes placental development. As folic acid influences DNA synthesis and fundamental cellular structure, adequate intake is especially crucial for the rapid growth of both the placenta and the fetus.

Fifth, folic acid may help prevent preeclampsia. Taking multivitamins containing folic acid has been associated with a reduced risk of preeclampsia during pregnancy.

Folic acid contributes significantly to maternal health. According to the Chinese Nutrition Society, women should begin supplementation 2–3 months prior to conception and continue through at least the first trimester—or throughout the entire pregnancy. In addition to preventing neural tube defects, folic acid supplementation may also help lower the risk of pregnancy-associated hyperlipidemia.
