Introduction
Bartholin’s gland cysts do not undergo malignant transformation. These cysts primarily develop due to chronic inflammation in the vulvar or vaginal region. Prolonged chronic inflammation leads to obstruction of the gland’s ductal opening, preventing normal drainage of secretions; over time, this results in cyst formation.

As a condition unique to women, Bartholin’s gland cysts are relatively unfamiliar to most people. Moreover, the name itself is highly specialized, leading many to overlook this condition in daily life. In fact, however, it can significantly impact one’s health; without timely and effective treatment, complications may arise.

Can a Bartholin’s gland cyst become cancerous?

Bartholin’s gland cysts do not undergo malignant transformation. They typically develop due to chronic inflammation in the vulvar or vaginal region. Prolonged chronic inflammation leads to obstruction of the gland’s ductal opening, preventing normal drainage of secretions—over time, this accumulation forms a cyst.

In the absence of infection, such cysts grow very slowly and usually remain asymptomatic. They are often only detectable upon palpation as a soft, cystic mass. Therefore, malignancy is exceedingly rare.

Maintaining local hygiene is essential in daily life. However, once infection occurs, patients may experience severe localized pain, and some may even develop an abscess requiring incision and drainage for effective resolution. Since Bartholin’s gland cysts result primarily from ductal obstruction, the risk of malignancy is extremely low. For smaller, uncomplicated cysts, treatment options include sitz baths with potassium permanganate alongside oral anti-inflammatory medications.

During pharmacological treatment, strict attention must be paid to perineal hygiene: wear loose-fitting, cotton underwear, and abstain from sexual intercourse.

All patients diagnosed with a Bartholin’s gland cyst should promptly consult a healthcare provider to develop an appropriate, individualized treatment plan—ensuring relief from discomfort and timely recovery.

We hope the above information is helpful. Wishing you good health and happiness!
