Introduction
Immediately after a dental cleaning, teeth may become sensitive to hot and cold substances, accompanied by discomfort or soreness. If an individual has low sensitivity to dental cleaning, this tooth sensitivity typically lasts about 7 days. However, if sensitivity is higher, the duration may be prolonged—up to approximately 15 days.

Teeth cleaning—commonly known as “dental scaling” or “teeth washing”—is medically termed “supragingival scaling.” It involves the use of specialized instruments to remove dental calculus (tartar), plaque, and surface stains from above the gumline, followed by polishing the tooth surfaces to delay the re-accumulation of plaque and calculus. So, how long does tooth sensitivity last after teeth cleaning? Below, we address this question.

How long does tooth sensitivity last after teeth cleaning?

Tooth sensitivity following teeth cleaning typically lasts approximately 7–15 days, depending on an individual’s sensitivity to the procedure.

Teeth cleaning—also referred to as dental scaling—uses specialized instruments to remove dental calculus, plaque, and other debris from the gingival surfaces. Additionally, it includes polishing the teeth to reduce the likelihood of subsequent plaque and calculus adhesion. Teeth cleaning is generally performed via two methods: manual scaling and ultrasonic scaling. Manual scaling is time-consuming and labor-intensive but offers superior tactile control and gentler force application, thereby reducing the risk of cross-contamination and patient discomfort. In contrast, ultrasonic scaling efficiently removes surface debris using high-frequency vibrations. Its integrated water-spray system simultaneously irrigates the oral cavity during cleaning, flushing away dislodged debris. Although ultrasonic scaling is faster, it may cause more pronounced discomfort during treatment and carries a relatively higher risk of cross-contamination.

Immediately after scaling, patients often experience heightened sensitivity—or even sharp pain—to hot, cold, sour, or sweet stimuli. Individuals with low sensitivity to scaling typically experience symptoms for about 7 days, whereas those with higher sensitivity may experience symptoms for up to approximately 15 days.

For a short period after scaling, avoid consuming foods or beverages that are extremely hot, cold, sour, or sweet, as these may exacerbate sensitivity. If discomfort is severe, desensitizing toothpaste may be used to help alleviate symptoms.

The above outlines how long tooth sensitivity may persist after teeth cleaning. We hope this information is helpful to you.
