Introduction
During the acute phase of gout, patients must avoid consuming grenadier fish (also known as hoki or rat-tail fish), as well as all types of fish, crabs, shrimp, shellfish, and other seafood—since these foods are extremely high in purines. Consuming such foods increases purine levels in the body; as purines are ultimately metabolized into uric acid, this can exacerbate gout symptoms.

For gout patients, adhering to a low-purine diet is essential, as it helps reduce purine intake and subsequently lower serum uric acid levels—thereby alleviating gout symptoms. So, can gout patients eat “hao’er fish” (a type of cuttlefish or squid commonly consumed in China)? Below, we address this question.

Can gout patients eat hao’er fish?

During the acute phase of gout, patients should avoid consuming hao’er fish entirely—as well as all other types of fish, crab, shrimp, shellfish, and seafood—since these foods are exceptionally high in purines. Ingestion may exacerbate the condition: elevated dietary purine intake increases endogenous purine load, and as purines metabolize into uric acid, serum uric acid concentrations rise, thereby worsening gout symptoms.

Gout is fundamentally a metabolic disorder characterized by dysregulated purine metabolism due to multiple etiologies, resulting in hyperuricemia and associated clinical manifestations. Therefore, during the acute phase, consumption of high-purine foods is strictly contraindicated, as it aggravates disease activity and harms overall health.

That said, hao’er fish is nutritionally rich: it contains abundant high-quality protein, virtually no fat, and various trace elements. Regular moderate intake may enhance immune function, effectively lower serum cholesterol levels, and provide essential nutrients. Thus, for patients with stable, chronic gout, limited, cautious consumption may be acceptable.

The above outlines whether gout patients may consume hao’er fish. We hope this information proves helpful.
