Introduction
Povidone-iodine antiseptic solution is used for skin disinfection. It is commonly applied to the surgical site prior to surgery, used to soak and disinfect surgical instruments, and employed for skin disinfection in operating rooms, injection sites, and general wounds—demonstrating excellent disinfectant properties. Povidone-iodine is for external use only and must not be ingested. Its concentration is relatively low and it is non-corrosive.

Some men work on construction sites, where inadequate self-protection during work can easily lead to local abrasions. For such injuries, povidone-iodine (iodophor) solution may be used for disinfection. What is the function of povidone-iodine solution?

What Is the Function of Povidone-Iodine Solution?

Povidone-iodine solution is indicated for skin disinfection. It is commonly used to disinfect surgical sites prior to procedures, to soak and disinfect surgical instruments, and for skin disinfection in operating rooms and at injection sites. It is also highly effective for disinfecting minor traumatic wounds, including mild burns, scalds, frostbite, lacerations, and abrasions.

Compared with other disinfectants, povidone-iodine offers several advantages, including minimal irritation, reduced wound pain, less staining, and excellent efficacy. It may also be used to disinfect children’s toys and tableware. Clinically, povidone-iodine is effective against bacterial vegetative cells, fungi, protozoa, and certain viruses. In gynecology, it is used to treat trichomonas vaginitis and fungal vaginitis; in dermatology, it can treat dermatomycosis (fungal skin infections).

However, povidone-iodine is strictly for external use and must never be ingested. Due to its relatively low iodine concentration and lack of significant corrosivity, povidone-iodine solutions are inherently less stable. Therefore, once opened, the solution should be used within one month and stored protected from light. During recovery, proper wound hygiene must also be maintained. We hope this information is helpful to you.
