Introduction
Clinically, scrotal eczema may trigger balanitis. Recurrent scrotal eczema can induce inflammatory reactions in the periscrotal skin. Given the anatomical proximity of the glans penis to the scrotum, inflammatory exudates from the scrotum may easily irritate the mucosa of the glans, ultimately leading to balanitis. This type of balanitis is classified as an allergic inflammation.

Many men suffer significantly from scrotal eczema. The primary subjective symptom experienced by patients with eczema is pruritus (intense itching), which causes profound discomfort throughout the body. In severe cases, even scratching fails to relieve the intense itch.

Can scrotal eczema lead to balanitis?

Clinically, scrotal eczema may trigger balanitis. Recurrent scrotal eczema can induce inflammatory changes in the surrounding scrotal skin. Given the anatomical proximity of the glans penis to the scrotum, inflammatory exudates from the scrotal region may easily irritate the mucosa of the glans, ultimately resulting in balanitis. Notably, this type of balanitis is classified as an allergic inflammation.

Additionally, scrotal eczema may be secondary to fungal infection. Once a fungal infection develops, it may spread to the glans penis, leading to fungal balanitis—an infectious form of balanitis. In such cases, antifungal therapy is required.

Following an episode of eczema, the skin often becomes more sensitive, and previously tolerated foods may now provoke allergic reactions. Therefore, patients should avoid beef, lamb, fish, shellfish, seafood, spicy foods, and alcohol. If the eczema does not improve, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist at a reputable Grade-A tertiary hospital for appropriate pharmacological treatment to achieve optimal outcomes.
