Introduction
For astigmatism, we cannot discuss whether it is “curable,” but rather whether it can be controlled and corrected. As a type of refractive error, its primary symptoms include blurred or unclear vision and increased susceptibility to eye fatigue—for example, after reading a book or using a smartphone for just 30 minutes, individuals with astigmatism may experience eye strain or soreness.

In recent years, the number of people suffering from ophthalmic diseases has been increasing—possibly due to the growing prevalence of electronic devices. Severe cases can even impair patients’ vision, such as with astigmatism. Can astigmatism be cured?

Can Astigmatism Be Cured?

Regarding astigmatism, it is not appropriate to discuss whether it can be “cured”; rather, we should consider whether it can be effectively controlled and corrected. As a type of refractive error, astigmatism primarily manifests with symptoms including blurred or unclear vision and increased visual fatigue. For instance, reading a book or using a smartphone for just 30 minutes may cause no discomfort in individuals with normal vision, whereas those with astigmatism may experience eye strain, soreness, excessive tearing, or photophobia—classic signs of visual fatigue.

Therefore, upon suspecting astigmatism, the first step is to visit an ophthalmologist for a comprehensive eye examination—including refraction testing—to precisely determine the degree and axis of astigmatism. Once assessed, corrective lenses—either spectacles or contact lenses—can be prescribed. For children and adolescents, spectacles are generally preferred due to their ease of use and convenience; lens prescriptions can be updated annually during follow-up visits.

Adult patients have more options available. These include specialized contact lenses—such as rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses or orthokeratology (OK) lenses—which correct astigmatism while preserving natural appearance. Alternatively, refractive surgery may be considered, provided the patient meets all preoperative eligibility criteria; thus, thorough pre-surgical evaluation is essential. We hope this information proves helpful!
