Introduction
The hazards of ice skating are extremely serious and can affect the body. For example, it may cause physical discomfort. Patients may experience elevated blood pressure, increased heart rate, palpitations, chest tightness, shortness of breath, fever, or jaw clenching. In severe cases, rhabdomyolysis, renal complications, or even death may occur. Psychologically, individuals may exhibit euphoria.

Ice skating is widely popular in daily life. Moderate ice skating can also enhance physical fitness. However, what are the potential harms of ice skating?

What Are the Harms of Ice Skating?

The hazards associated with ice skating can be severe and may affect multiple body systems. For instance, it may cause physical discomfort, including elevated blood pressure, increased heart rate, palpitations, chest tightness, shortness of breath, elevated body temperature, or jaw clenching. In severe cases, rhabdomyolysis, renal complications, or even death may occur. Psychologically, individuals may experience euphoria, heightened attention, behavioral disorganization, anxiety, agitation, impaired involuntary motor function, aggressive or harmful behavior, object destruction, delusions, allergic reactions, or even suicidal ideation.

Specific health benefits of ice skating include improved blood circulation and enhanced muscular development; stress and tension reduction, physical relaxation, and improved sleep quality; promotion of mental and physical well-being and happiness through the enjoyment of skating; assistance in reducing excess body fat and preventing sudden weight gain; and—through regular practice—enhanced metabolic utilization of fats and sugars.

In Hong Kong, this activity is commonly referred to as “ice skating,” whereas in mainland China it is known as “roller skating” or “inline skating,” in Taiwan as “roller skating,” and in Macau as “snowshoeing.” Regardless of the regional terminology, these terms primarily serve to distinguish between activities performed on natural or artificial ice surfaces versus non-ice surfaces. The defining feature of this sport is the use of specialized footwear—either ice skates (with metal blades) or roller skates (with wheels)—to glide smoothly across a surface.
