Is it okay to drink yogurt on an empty stomach in the morning?
It is generally not recommended to drink yogurt on an empty stomach, as yogurt is an acidic beverage. Consuming it without food may irritate the gastric mucosa, leading to increased gastric acid secretion. The lactic acid in yogurt can further stimulate the stomach lining upon entry, potentially causing symptoms such as gastric pain, acid reflux, and nausea in some individuals.
Additionally, blood glucose levels tend to be relatively low in the morning. Since yogurt digestion and absorption require energy expenditure, some people may experience hypoglycemia. Therefore, it is advisable to drink warm plain water or consume mild foods—such as rice porridge—in the morning, rather than drinking cold yogurt on an empty stomach. The cold temperature itself may also contribute to gastric mucosal inflammation.
Under normal circumstances, yogurt is best consumed 30 minutes to 2 hours after a meal. As food digests, gastric juices become diluted, facilitating optimal absorption of yogurt’s nutrients and promoting digestive health and overall well-being.
