How to Treat Hyperglycemia
Both excessively high and low blood glucose levels can adversely affect health. If you have been diagnosed with hyperglycemia, it is essential to follow your physician’s treatment plan and make appropriate adjustments to your daily diet. Without effective management, the condition may progressively worsen. So, how should hyperglycemia be treated?
How to Treat Hyperglycemia
The first step in treating hyperglycemia is identifying its underlying cause and implementing targeted therapy. If hyperglycemia results from diabetes, treatment should adhere to established diabetes management principles. If an endocrine disorder—such as hyperthyroidism—is responsible, blood glucose levels may also rise. When glucose elevation remains within borderline ranges, normalization often occurs alongside successful control of the thyroid disorder; in such cases, antihyperglycemic medications may be reduced or even discontinued, with close monitoring of blood glucose levels. For diabetes-related hyperglycemia, lifestyle interventions are typically initiated first if glucose levels remain within acceptable limits. Should these prove ineffective, pharmacologic therapy—including oral hypoglycemic agents and/or insulin—may be introduced.

Dietary recommendations include eating smaller, more frequent meals at regular intervals, with a varied intake of foods rich in dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals, incorporating both refined and whole-grain carbohydrates. Total caloric intake should be individually tailored based on the patient’s height, weight, and physical activity level, aiming for energy balance to maintain a healthy body weight. Physical activity should be gradually increased, with exercise plans customized according to the patient’s personal preferences. Pharmacologic treatment regimens must likewise be individualized, taking into account the presence of complications, residual beta-cell (islet) function, and patient adherence.

Regular blood glucose monitoring is essential, and treatment plans should be adjusted accordingly based on monitoring results. We hope this information proves helpful! Wishing you good health and happiness!
