Introduction
1. Pharmacological Treatment: Commonly used medications include anticonvulsants such as pregabalin and gabapentin; antidepressants such as duloxetine, venlafaxine, and amitriptyline; and, in some cases, opioid analgesics as adjunctive therapy. 2. Minimally Invasive Interventional Therapies: These include nerve block therapy, pulsed radiofrequency treatment targeting peripheral nerves or dorsal root ganglia, and spinal cord stimulation.

In daily life, some individuals develop herpes zoster (shingles), causing significant physical suffering and substantially impacting their daily life and work. The pain associated with shingles is often unbearable. So, what are the folk remedies for treating postherpetic neuralgia (PHN)?

Treatment of Postherpetic Neuralgia

The goals of PHN treatment are nerve repair and pain relief. Common treatment approaches include:

       1. Pharmacotherapy: Commonly used medications include anticonvulsants such as pregabalin and gabapentin; antidepressants such as duloxetine, venlafaxine, and amitriptyline; and, in select cases, opioid analgesics as adjunctive therapy.

       2. Minimally invasive interventional therapies: These include nerve blocks, pulsed radiofrequency treatment targeting local nerves or dorsal root ganglia, and spinal cord stimulation.

Herpes zoster is a viral dermatosis caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), characterized by clusters of vesicles distributed along affected dermatomes and associated neuropathic pain. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is termed “coiling waist fire dragon” or “coiling waist fire rash.” Folk names include “snake rash” and “spider sore.” Neuropathic pain is a hallmark feature of this condition; in some patients, pain persists at the affected site even after the skin lesions have resolved—potentially lasting for months or even years—termed postherpetic neuralgia (PHN).

Patients should avoid spicy, stimulating foods and refrain from consuming “trigger foods” (foods believed in TCM to exacerbate conditions). Adequate rest and quality sleep are essential. We hope this information is helpful to you!
