Pharmacological Effects and Clinical Uses of Miconazole
Miconazole—also known as bifonazole, mycozole, or mycogel—is an imidazole-class antifungal agent that inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes, in susceptible fungi. Nitrate miconazole (commonly marketed as Daktarin®) is widely used clinically for the treatment of various superficial fungal infections affecting the skin and mucous membranes.

It is primarily indicated for the treatment of cutaneous candidiasis and dermatophytoses, including tinea pedis (athlete’s foot), tinea manuum (hand fungus), tinea corporis (ringworm), and tinea versicolor (pityriasis versicolor). Although miconazole may also be used for disseminated fungal infections, other azole antifungals are now more commonly preferred for systemic or oral therapy. For such cases, topical application of miconazole cream or ointment may be used adjunctively. In oropharyngeal candidiasis, patients may apply miconazole topically while concurrently receiving systemic antimicrobial therapy. Ophthalmic formulations of miconazole are indicated for ocular inflammation caused by Paecilomyces spp., Candida albicans, or Aspergillus spp., particularly in cases where amphotericin B therapy has failed.
