Can fatty liver disease heal on its own?
The development of fatty liver disease is associated, to some extent, with irregular dietary habits, and its impact on human health is multifaceted. So, can fatty liver disease resolve spontaneously?
Can Fatty Liver Disease Resolve Spontaneously?
Whether fatty liver disease can resolve spontaneously depends on its severity and whether the underlying cause can be promptly and effectively addressed. Patients with mild non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or mild alcoholic fatty liver disease—provided their liver function remains normal—can achieve spontaneous resolution through appropriate lifestyle modifications. Such patients should pay close attention to diet and daily routines. Specifically, they must limit intake of high-fat and high-sugar foods, including fatty meats, squid, organ meats (e.g., liver, kidney), and bone marrow. Smoking cessation and strict abstinence from alcohol are essential, as most alcohol is metabolized in the liver, posing significant harm to individuals with fatty liver disease.

Additionally, total intake of plant-based oils should be monitored carefully. Many processed foods—including high-sugar snacks, biscuits, puffed snacks, and ultra-processed items—contain substantial amounts of fat and should therefore be consumed sparingly or avoided altogether. Foods high in added sugars—such as sauces, chocolate candies, and cream cakes—should also be minimized. Regular physical activity and weight loss are strongly recommended: aim for 3–5 sessions per week of aerobic exercise. Even patients with severe fatty liver disease may experience spontaneous improvement, provided the condition has not yet progressed to cirrhosis. Abstinence from alcohol, dietary control, and consistent exercise can help restore liver health.

Beyond dietary and exercise interventions, pharmacological treatment may be necessary if liver function abnormalities persist. For fatty liver disease accompanied by impaired liver function, oral hepatoprotective medications are generally recommended. We hope this information proves helpful!
