Introduction
After ovulation, the ovarian corpus luteum produces large amounts of progesterone, leading to a rapid rise in systemic progesterone levels. Progesterone concentration peaks 6–8 days after the mid-cycle LH surge and gradually declines to follicular-phase levels four days before menstruation. During pregnancy, progesterone levels increase steadily with gestational age: at 6 weeks’ gestation, circulating progesterone is primarily derived from the ovarian corpus luteum, whereas in late pregnancy, it is predominantly secreted by the placenta.

In daily life, many women experiencing their first pregnancy are unfamiliar with fundamental reproductive health knowledge. To better assess maternal and fetal health, it is essential to confirm that certain biomarker values fall within normal reference ranges. So—what is the normal range for progesterone?

Normal Progesterone Range

During early pregnancy, the normal progesterone range is 63.5–95.4 nmol/L; during mid-pregnancy, it is 158–318 nmol/L; and in late pregnancy, it rises to 131–1272 nmol/L. Early in pregnancy, a serum progesterone level above 25 ng/mL generally rules out ectopic pregnancy. Progesterone levels fluctuate cyclically throughout the menstrual cycle: they remain very low during the follicular phase, then rise sharply after ovulation due to increased production by the ovarian corpus luteum. Progesterone concentration peaks 6–8 days after the mid-cycle luteinizing hormone (LH) surge and gradually declines over the last four days before menstruation, returning to follicular-phase levels. During pregnancy, progesterone levels increase steadily as gestation progresses: in the first six weeks, progesterone is primarily secreted by the ovarian corpus luteum; in late pregnancy, the placenta becomes the main source.

Progesterone is a hormone secreted by the ovaries and is indispensable throughout pregnancy. It supports and sustains early fetal growth and development. Adequate progesterone ensures safe implantation of the fertilized egg and promotes normal fetal development. Under the influence of estrogen, progesterone also facilitates proper mammary gland development in preparation for lactation after delivery.

During pregnancy, it is advisable to limit intake of spicy, heavily seasoned, or highly stimulating foods. Maintain regular work and rest schedules, avoid excessive fatigue, focus on nurturing a healthy pregnancy, and attend all scheduled prenatal check-ups. We hope this information proves helpful!
