Introduction
Estradiol is a steroid estrogen. There are two types, one of which exhibits potent physiological activity. Normal estradiol levels vary depending on the menstrual phase: during the follicular phase, the normal range is approximately 92–275 pmol/L; during the ovulatory phase, it is 34–2200 pmol/L; and during the luteal phase, it is 499–1580 pmol/L.

Estradiol promotes and regulates the normal development of female genital organs and secondary sexual characteristics, and facilitates maturation and growth of mammary ducts. So, what is the normal range for estradiol?

What Is the Normal Range for Estradiol?

Estradiol is a steroid estrogen, existing in two forms—of which one exhibits stronger physiological activity. Its normal reference range varies depending on the phase of the menstrual cycle: during the follicular phase, the normal range is approximately 92–275 pmol/L; during ovulation, it ranges from 34–2200 pmol/L; and during the luteal phase, it is 499–1580 pmol/L. Estradiol levels below 100 pmol/L are generally considered low. As the most biologically active estrogen, estradiol plays a key role in maintaining female physiological functions and the development of secondary sexual characteristics.

The optimal timing for clinical estradiol testing depends on the purpose of the examination. To assess baseline (early follicular phase) levels, blood sampling is typically performed on days 2–3 of the menstrual cycle. It is not advisable to interpret estradiol results solely based on laboratory reference values printed on the test report. Estradiol is a critical estrogen in women of childbearing age, primarily secreted by ovarian follicles, and its concentration fluctuates significantly throughout the menstrual cycle. It interacts dynamically with other sex hormones; therefore, comprehensive evaluation—including correlation with other hormonal parameters—is essential for accurate interpretation.

Prior to estradiol testing, maintain a light diet rich in fresh vegetables and fruits, and avoid spicy or irritating foods such as chili peppers and mustard. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you a joyful life and good health!
