Watermelon has a high water content and possesses properties that clear heat, promote diuresis, and relieve constipation. Consuming watermelon in moderation during a gout flare-up helps increase fluid intake, facilitates urination and bowel movements, and thereby supports the excretion of uric acid from the body.

However, it is important to note that watermelon is considered “cold” in nature according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. Patients with gout who have weak spleen-stomach function or chronic diarrhea should consume watermelon only in moderation—regardless of disease activity. Additionally, because watermelon contains abundant natural sugars, patients with gout who also experience elevated blood glucose levels should likewise limit their intake.

Gout is a metabolic rheumatic disorder caused by excessive uric acid production—resulting from high-purine diets—which deposits in joints and triggers inflammatory arthritis. Since watermelon contains very little purine, it is safe for gout patients to consume. Nevertheless, portion control remains essential. While whole watermelon is acceptable, watermelon juice is not recommended. Fruit juices contain high concentrations of fructose, and excessive fructose intake impairs uric acid metabolism.
