Introduction
Symptoms of bacterial diarrhea vary in severity and may include gastrointestinal discomfort such as anorexia, nausea, and vomiting. Patients may also experience marked abdominal pain, increased frequency of bowel movements—typically presenting as loose stools—and fever secondary to inflammation. Routine stool and blood tests are required to confirm the diagnosis. Bacterial diarrhea can result from oral infection and invasion of the gastrointestinal tract, and is commonly caused by ingestion of contaminated food or water. Most cases have an acute onset.

Bacterial diarrhea typically occurs during the summer and autumn months, with infants having a higher incidence than adults. What are the symptoms and treatment options for bacterial diarrhea?

Symptoms and Treatment of Bacterial Diarrhea

The severity of symptoms in bacterial diarrhea varies widely and may include gastrointestinal discomfort such as loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting. Patients may also experience significant abdominal pain, increased frequency of bowel movements—typically presenting as loose or watery stools—and fever resulting from inflammation. Routine stool and blood tests are required to confirm the diagnosis. Bacterial diarrhea may arise from oral infection and invasion of the gastrointestinal tract, and is commonly caused by ingestion of contaminated food or water. Most cases have an acute onset.

Under the guidance of a qualified physician, treatment generally includes anti-inflammatory, antidiarrheal, and antipyretic medications. For example, antibiotics such as amoxicillin (a penicillin) or cefalexin (a cephalosporin) may be prescribed for anti-inflammatory therapy, while oral montmorillonite powder can be used to control diarrhea. Berberine may also be administered for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.

When fever is present, physical cooling methods—such as tepid sponging or application of ice packs—are recommended if body temperature remains below 38.5°C. However, if temperature exceeds 38.5°C, ibuprofen suspension may be administered. In cases of severe diarrhea, oral rehydration solutions (ORS) may be used to restore fluid and electrolyte balance, thereby supporting recovery. We hope this information proves helpful.
