What Causes Stomach Pain and Diarrhea?
While engaged in demanding work, you suddenly experience stomach pain accompanied by diarrhea—a sensation many people have likely encountered.
What Causes Stomach Pain and Diarrhea?
Stomach pain with diarrhea may be associated with conditions such as acute gastroenteritis, food poisoning, cholecystitis, or pancreatitis. First, overeating, consuming cold foods or beverages, or abdominal exposure to cold can trigger acute gastroenteritis. During the onset of this condition, inflammation develops in the gastrointestinal mucosa, leading to smooth muscle spasm and contraction. Consequently, patients not only suffer stomach pain but also experience accelerated intestinal motility, resulting in diarrhea. Second, certain foods may contain toxins. Once ingested, these toxic substances can induce gastrointestinal spasms, causing both stomach pain and diarrhea.

First, it is essential to replenish fluids adequately. Oral rehydration salts (ORS) or oral glucose solutions can help restore lost fluids and electrolytes and prevent dehydration. Patients may take smectite powder to control diarrhea. In some cases, antibiotics may be prescribed—for example, berberine or gentamicin—but these must only be used under a physician’s guidance; self-medication is strongly discouraged.

Patients should avoid prolonged irregular eating patterns. Maintaining healthy, sufficient sleep also significantly helps alleviate stomach pain. Daily meals should consist of mild, non-irritating foods; spicy or highly seasoned dishes should be avoided. Regular, moderate physical activity appropriate to one’s fitness level can also effectively relieve gastric discomfort. We hope this information proves helpful!
