Why Can’t Patients with Carambola-Induced Nephropathy Consume Star Fruit?
Disease description:
After being diagnosed with kidney disease, I was hospitalized for over a month before my condition improved. Upon discharge, I was explicitly instructed never to eat star fruit (carambola). Could you please explain why patients with kidney disease must avoid star fruit?
Starfruit contains natural toxins that can exacerbate kidney disease; therefore, patients with renal disorders must avoid consuming starfruit. Additionally, they should strictly adhere to a low-sodium, low-fat diet—excess salt increases the kidneys’ workload and hinders recovery. A nutritionally balanced, light, and easily digestible diet better supports energy replenishment. Incorporating both plant-based and animal-based foods, along with increased intake of fresh vegetables and fruits, enhances the body’s antioxidant capacity. Appropriate physical exercise further promotes overall health recovery.
