Disease description:

Several years ago, my husband was diagnosed with diabetes. Today, he underwent a follow-up examination at the hospital. Could you please tell me: Is a urine protein level of “3+” in diabetes considered severe?

Dr. Zhao Xinju
If a diabetic patient’s urinalysis shows “3+” for urinary protein, this is a critical warning sign requiring immediate attention. In healthy individuals, urinary protein levels are extremely low; however, in diabetic patients, disease-related changes can cause a marked increase in urinary protein. A “3+” result indicates impaired kidney filtration function and is often an early sign of diabetic nephropathy or other serious complications. Diabetic nephropathy is a common complication of diabetes, frequently resulting from poor glycemic control, and may progress over time to renal failure if left unmanaged. Timely and active treatment can slow disease progression and extend survival. Therefore, diabetic patients who develop symptoms of proteinuria—or who have any concerns—should seek medical evaluation promptly to receive professional diagnostic testing and appropriate treatment, thereby preventing further deterioration of their condition.
