Black stool accompanied by abdominal pain is unlikely to be directly related to kidney stones. Kidney stones typically present with urinary abnormalities, such as dysuria (painful urination) or hematuria (blood in the urine). Black stool warrants a routine stool examination to assess for occult blood; this symptom is most commonly attributable to upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
