I frequently take oral contraceptives and am concerned that they may affect my menstrual cycle. What effects do oral contraceptives have on menstruation?

Dr. Zhang Jianhai
Oral contraceptives commonly alter the menstrual cycle—for instance, causing periods to occur earlier or later than expected—and may also lead to increased or decreased menstrual flow. In severe cases, they can even cause amenorrhea. Since oral contraceptives contain hormonal components, they easily disrupt endocrine function and produce adverse effects; therefore, they should not be used frequently. Alternative contraceptive methods are recommended.
