Disease description:

I have a heart murmur and an abnormally rapid heartbeat. I visited the hospital and underwent an electrocardiogram (ECG) that revealed ventricular premature contractions (VPCs) in trigeminy. Could you please explain the characteristic features of an ECG showing VPCs in trigeminy?

Dr. Liu Shilei
The electrocardiographic (ECG) feature of ventricular trigeminy is the occurrence of one premature ventricular contraction (PVC) after every two normal sinus beats. If the patient exhibits no other abnormal symptoms, specific treatment may not be required. However, if clinical symptoms such as chest tightness, fatigue, palpitations, diaphoresis, or chest pain occur, treatment with beta-blockers or antiarrhythmic drugs may be indicated. For refractory cases unresponsive to pharmacological therapy, radiofrequency ablation may be performed.
