Can people with gout eat bananas?
Disease description:
My grandfather has been unwell recently and was diagnosed with gout after a hospital examination. He is currently undergoing medication treatment, but we’re unsure about dietary restrictions—specifically, which foods are safe or unsafe for him to consume. Could you please advise, Doctor: Is it safe for someone with gout to eat bananas?
Patients with gout can eat bananas. Gout is typically caused by impaired purine metabolism, leading to excessive uric acid production and reduced excretion. Therefore, it is essential to limit intake of high-purine foods—such as organ meats and seafood—and to avoid beer entirely. If symptoms persist, uric acid–lowering medications and analgesics may be used symptomatically.
