Is sepsis contagious?
Disease description:
A friend of mine has developed sepsis, and he is worried it might be contagious to others, so he has been staying at home and refusing to go out. I would like to ask: Is sepsis contagious?
Sepsis is not contagious because it is not an infectious disease. Sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by the body’s dysregulated response to infection—most commonly bacterial, though viral or fungal infections can also trigger it—leading to systemic inflammation and potential organ dysfunction. While pathogens (e.g., bacteria or viruses) may be present in the bloodstream, sepsis itself cannot be transmitted through casual contact. However, if the underlying infection involves the respiratory tract (e.g., pneumonia or influenza), the causative pathogen may be transmissible via respiratory droplets; therefore, appropriate infection prevention measures should be observed when caring for or interacting with such patients.
