During a routine physical examination, my electrocardiogram (ECG) was reported as “borderline ECG.” I’m unsure what this means and would like to know whether a borderline ECG is normal or abnormal.

An “indeterminate” or “borderline” ECG is considered abnormal because it refers to subtle changes in the ST segment and T wave on the electrocardiogram. Such findings may be associated with coronary artery disease and therefore are not considered normal. Additionally, borderline ECG changes can arise from technical errors during ECG acquisition, effects of certain medications, or underlying cardiovascular disease. Patients exhibiting borderline ECG findings are advised to undergo further diagnostic evaluation as early as possible.
